Hello! We have made it through the first two full weeks of school and the class is doing really well learning rules, expectations and procedures! I know most kiddos are coming home tired and cranky from such a long day, but it will get easier each day as they transition into kindergarten. We are reviewing an alphabet letter each day and began Writer's Workshop last week. Students begin the writing process with drawing a picture, then labeling and finally, writing words. It is fun seeing the progress they make at this age. We are also spending some time each day learning how to hold a pencil correctly and working on fine motor development.
Next week, we will begin our math curriculum. You will see math pages come home each day. If you notice there is a problem that is not completed, it's because we did not do it together in class. Some days, there is not enough time to finish, or they do not need to do all of the problems and I will tell them to do a select few. Please do not worry if there are some that aren't completed. I will check before they take them home to make sure they are doing what they need to finish. There is a homework component to our math curriculum. It will be stapled to the back of the math we do together at school. You are welcome to do this at home with your child, but it is not assigned homework, and does not need to be sent back to school. If I feel your child needs the extra help at home and would benefit from the homework pages, I will let you know.

LEADER IN ME
Each morning, we begin our day with a class meeting. This is from 8:40-9:00. During this time, we will discuss a habit from Stephen Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. These habits are being taught school-wide. The first habit is being proactive, which means taking care of yourself and making good choices. I will send information about each habit home as we learn them.
DAILY 5
We will begin the Daily 5 next week. Daily 5 is the framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently. Each week a new part of the daily 5 will be introduced. The components are Read to Self, Work on Writing, Word Work and Listen to Reading and Read to Someone. Next week we will focus on Read to Self, which is a time that students will learn to select books that are a good fit for them, and learn to read (looking at pictures this time of year) independently. I will meet with small groups for instruction while students are Reading to Self.
Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
