I hope you had a good break! I had a great break, and lots of great family time. It was nice to be back at school and to see the class too. It has been fun to hear all of the stories about what the kiddos did over break!

A note from Ms. Mathers, our art teacher:
SNOWMAN CONTEST
Between now and the last week of January students can make a snowman, out of real snow, and enter the contest. Adults and siblings can help the Willard East Student. When complete, take a picture and write your name and teacher code on the back (K-W) Then turn it into the art room before February 6th. If more than one student from East helps build the snowman, then both names go on the back. Be creative and don't be afraid to experiment with color. Last year's winner was a snow pig holding a snow pancake.
February 9th, you can go on the art website and vote for your favorite snowman. ART WEBSITE The winning snowman will be announced at the end of the month and receive a prize.
Good Luck Everyone!
UPCOMING DATES
January 19th- NO SCHOOL
Ask your child about...
Writing-Review Writer's Workshop expectations at the beginning of the week. We will begin Unit 3-How To Books. This can be a very difficult unit because students have to organize their thoughts in order to explain how to do something. Also, they will be expected to continue using spaces between words and writing spelling words on their own while stretching out words that they don't know. During this unit, if your child is struggling with writing you can help at home by writing simple sentences: I like to... It is also important that your child has mastered their letter sounds by now. If they have not, please continue to help them at home. Ex: When you see a dog outside you can ask your child what sound they hear at the beginning of dog, what sound at the end?
Science-Moon Phases
Daily 5-Word Work, Work on Writing, Read to Self- We are continuing to work on independent skills during these times. While the students are working independently, I am working in small guided reading groups. The kids love meeting, and getting a new book that they can practice reading for their book bags.
Word Families -all, -an, -am
Math-We will begin to slowly introduce subtraction this week. Just like with addition, the students need to be fluent within 5; this means 5-5 is as far as we are expected to learn in kindergarten. We will focus on subtraction for 3-4 weeks to make sure the students are confident in this skill.
